Our journey to growing food began when the fence between us and our neighbour was falling down and needed replacing.

We took the opportunity to grow vibrant food rather than replacing a boring, lifeless fence.

Rewilding in Suburbia

This video was created by Mac Lyon from Stories Told that encapsulates who we are, why we are passionate about connecting to nature and all that we do in our suburban home in Bayswater, Melbourne.

“We need to get back to our roots; of growing food and connecting with nature” -Georgina Davies

Our Story.

Here is a visual snapshot of how our garden came to be…

First it started with an the edible fence between us and the neighbours, then we set about growing as much food as we could on our 900m2 suburban block. Then chickens for eggs, aquaponics system to grow fish to eat, beehives to help increase the bee population and for honey and much more….

  • Preparing area for the edible fence

When our front wooden fence needed replacing, we worked with our neighbours to dig up the concrete surrounding and replace the wooden fence with an edible one.

  • Creation of the edible fence

We designed the fence so that when it was fully grown it would provide height and coverage so that some privacy remained. It was exciting to have a lush green space that provided food rather than a hot lifeless fence.

  • The edible fence

Our edible fence has now fully grown and provides produce all year round. It’s a joy to share this space with our next door neighbours.

  • Our first harvest

It was a team effort with our neighbours to nurture the trees to ensure they grew to provide our first harvest.

  • Creating an edible garden

We aim to grow as much food as we can in our suburban block. We are willing to try anything to increase our ability to live more sustainably and we hope to support you in trying some of these ideas.

  • Chickens

After establishing the edible garden, chickens were the next addition. To collect fresh eggs is amazing and it is great for our boys to be responsible for feeding the girls and collecting the eggs. The chickens also provide great manure for our garden.

  • Aquaponics

This was an amazing project I did with my boys, learning about maths, science, construction, maintenance and at the end of the day we had trout and vegies to eat.

  • Beekeeping

The next venture was to increase pollination and to produce our own honey. After completing a beekeeping course and purchasing a hive and equipment, we were on our way.

  • Sharing our knowledge with you

We have learnt so much over the past 16 years of developing our suburban garden. Now we hope to encourage and educate more people to grow as much food as they are capable of.
